Wireless Laptop/PC to Camera Control solution

This is when you want to remotely access and operate all the camera controls and settings available from your remote capture software by replacing the USB cable from your laptop/PC to the camera with a USB wireless extender.

So typically in this scenario the MDRP360 panner will be controlled by the controller and the camera will be controlled by the laptop/PC. It is still possible to fire the camera, set exposure control and auto tour and ExpressPan® with the hand controller and the MDRP360.

Our wireless USB extender can be used for distances up to 100’ according to the manufacturer’s specification. However, wireless transmissions can be affected by environmental conditions reducing the range and in some cases even extending it! The only way to effectively test the range is to try it in the area and conditions you intend to use it. If you do find the range is too short then there are additional methods and accessories available to extend the range. One is by powering the host local wireless unit via the mains – the grounding can act as additional gain. A second solution can be used with the first or separately to replace the standard antennae on one or both wireless units with Yagi high gain antennae. In this case, very long distances have been achieved – even up to miles!

The wireless USB extender has two parts. One for the laptop/PC host end and one for the remote equipment – in this case the camera. Both units can be powered by mains or a Li-Ion battery. Typically the battery will have enough power for around 5 hours. Longer times can be achieved with different batteries.

The wireless USB extenders are simple to use requiring no extra discs or software to install. On first connection to the laptop/PC the local unit will install as a generic USB device. On connecting the remote unit to the camera, both units will immediately attempt to discover each other. You can easily monitor the connection by a series of LED lights on both units. When connected all lights will be on and very stable within the usable range. The camera can then be connected via the USB cable to the remote unit. The laptop/PC thinks the camera is being connected directly by a USB cable – it sees no difference between cable and wireless USB. The only change will come about is if the units are moved out of transmission range and the wireless USB signal can be dropped.

Since wireless USB transmits at a slower speed than direct cable, there is a consideration to take into account. If you are saving images as large format, they will take a lot longer to save to laptop/PC via wireless than by cable. This will delay you taking the next picture until the save has completed. Therefore you should set your remote capture software to ‘Save to Camera’ only so that no file transmission takes place. If your remote capture software does not have this facility then other remote capture software exists such as from Breeze Systems which does have this feature. All other camera functions accessed wirelessly will be slightly slower but the facilities of wireless remote control far outweigh the speed degradation.

An example of speed differences can be explained in that via cable, Live View will operate at around 25-30 FPS (frames per second) whereas wirelessly will be around 10 FPS.
